    Tips for Moving In

    Tips & Advice February 18, 2015 Share:

So, your custom home construction is complete. The last nail is instilled on the wall, and you are about to start the process of moving in. Throughout the whole hustle-and-bustle of the construction process, one thing may have skipped your mind: moving is quite a lot of work! Are you up to the task?

    Moving In: Make It Easy

You’ve already exerted untold amounts of energy planning, designing and seeing your brand new house. It can be disillusioning to discover you have another stressful task in front of you when all you want to do is take a relaxing bath in your new luxury bathroom. However, you can save yourself both time and a headache with the following move-in tips.

    Packing

Hindsight is 20-20, so make sure you put in the proper legwork before you start moving in. First on the list of suggestions is packing. Be sure to pack your absolute necessities so you’re not scrambling to find them upon arriving. Also, keep track of all valuable items such as jewelry, cash and credit cards. Your list will probably include (among other items):

    • Bedding/linens
    • Clothes (at least a few pairs)
    • Medications
    • Toiletries
    • Tools for unpacking (e.g. boxcutter)
    • Wires and extension cords

    Staying Organized

Staying organized is key to moving in. In addition to your packing list, be sure to make a list of all to-do items to take place before, during and after your move. These will include:

    • Canceling or transferring your utilities accounts
    • Changing your mailing address at the post office
    • Changing your billing address with your bank
    • Changing the address on all other accounts (e.g. Amazon, Netflix, etc.)
    • Procuring your security deposit (if applicable)

It’s also an excellent idea to label your packages, which will make unpacking easier. You might even go so far as to label each one’s specific room and use. This way, you can place your “laundry room – shelf” box right there as soon as you walk in the door.
